Software engineering is changing without changing its name. Engineers still design systems, write code, review changes, operate services, and take responsibility for what reaches users. But AI has changed the pace, volume, and shape of that work.

The modern engineer does not simply produce code faster. They decide what deserves automation, provide the context that makes AI useful, recognize when generated work is weak, and retain judgment over architecture, trade-offs, and consequences.

This handbook will examine the changing craft of software engineering: how to work with AI without outsourcing thinking, which forms of judgment become more valuable, and what responsible engineering looks like when implementation is no longer the only scarce skill.
